- Filter the GA4 Traffic acquisition report to isolate active referral sessions.
- Add landing page dimensions to spot which articles win real referral clicks.
- Combine GA4 referral data with Search Console to audit complete link profiles.

To check backlinks in Google Analytics, open Reports. Go to Acquisition. Click Traffic acquisition. Filter the table by the referral medium. GA4 tracks visitors who arrive by clicking a link on another website. It does not scan the web for links that get no clicks. Use the step-by-step audit workflow and evaluation checklist below to review your referring links.
What Google Analytics 4 actually shows for backlinks
Google Analytics measures user actions. It is not a search crawler. It tracks visits when someone clicks a link on an external website and visits your page. If a site links to your post but nobody clicks it, GA4 shows nothing.
Most backlinks never generate a referral click. GA4 records only the links that users actually follow to your site. It reveals nothing about link equity or search engine PageRank signals. GA4 shows whether referring domains generate engaged reader visits.
The table below highlights the difference between web crawler link lists and analytics referral data.
| Metric or Dimension | Google Analytics 4 (Referrals) | Google Search Console (Links) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Purpose | Measures visits and user actions | Catalogs crawled web backlinks |
| Records Dormant Links | No; needs a recorded click | Yes; records discovered web links |
| Anchor Text Display | None; browsers omit anchor text | Yes; lists top linking text strings |
| Landing Page Data | Yes; tracks full session landing URLs | Yes; lists target pages on your domain |
| Conversion Tracking | Yes; tracks leads and sales | None; tracks search signals only |
| Cost | Free | Free |

Step-by-step workflow to check backlinks in GA4
Follow these steps to find your active backlink referrers in GA4.
Step 1: Open the Traffic acquisition report
Sign in to your Google Analytics dashboard and pick your web property.
Click Reports in the left menu. Click Acquisition to expand the section. Open the Traffic acquisition report. As explained in the Google Analytics Help documentation, this report evaluates session-level source and medium dimensions across your site.
Step 2: Filter the report for referral traffic
By default, GA4 shows all traffic channels like Search, Direct, and Social.
Click the Add filter button sitting above the report summary cards. In the filter setup drawer, set the dimension to Session medium. Choose the condition exactly matches. Select referral as the dimension value and click Apply. The data table refreshes to show only referral traffic. For more on evaluating these visits, see our guide on how to check referral traffic in GA4.
Step 3: Add landing page as a secondary dimension
Seeing a referring root domain is helpful. But knowing the exact URL that earned the referral is far more critical for link building outreach.
Click the plus icon next to Session source. In the search box that opens, type Landing page + query string and click it. GA4 now pairs each referring site with its destination URL. This shows which guest posts or guides drive visits. To check if linking domains have real authority, read our guide to how to check domain authority and traffic.
Step 4: Analyze session engagement and conversions
Raw click counts do not prove business value. A link from an off-topic site might send accidental clicks that leave right away.
Check the Engaged sessions and Average engagement time columns. Look at Key events or Conversions tied to each domain. A niche blog sending ten visitors who spend two minutes reading your pricing page offers real value. An aggregator sending empty clicks does not. To audit your domain ratios, use our guide on how to check referring domains.
How to filter out unwanted referrals and spam
Payment systems and automated scrapers distort referral numbers. Simple exclusion rules keep your data clean.
When buyers check out via PayPal or Stripe, they leave your site briefly. When they return, GA4 may count them as a new referral. That skews your sales tracking.
To exclude payment systems, open Admin in GA4. Go to Data Streams and choose your Web stream. Click Configure tag settings. Click Show all, then select List unwanted referrals. Add your payment gateways there. You can also view your verified external links in Google Search Console Links reports to cross-check referral domains against crawled web links.
Backlink referral quality evaluation matrix
Use this evaluation matrix as your audit checklist to grade referring domains found in your GA4 reports.
| Traffic Pattern | Observed GA4 Behavior | Link Profile Value | Action to Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Engagement Referral | Engagement time over 60 seconds; conversions present | High commercial and editorial value | Nurture relationship; pitch follow-up guest posts |
| Low Engagement Volume | Engagement rate below 10%; average engagement under 5 seconds | Low value; possible scraper or bot click | Check referring domain legitimacy; monitor trends |
| Payment Gateway Referral | Visitors land exclusively on checkout confirmation | Neutral administrative traffic | Add domain to unwanted referral exclusion list |
| Ghost Referral Spam | Unusual hostnames with zero page interaction | Zero value; fake analytics measurement hit | Apply internal filters and ignore in SEO audits |

Frequently asked questions
Can you check all backlinks in Google Analytics?
Google Analytics only reports backlinks that drive user sessions. Links that receive zero clicks do not appear in GA4 reports.
Where do backlinks appear in Google Analytics 4?
Open Reports. Go to Acquisition. Select Traffic acquisition. Filter the primary dimension by Session source / medium with the term referral.
Why does Google Analytics not show link anchor text?
Browsers pass the referring website URL in the HTTP referer header. They do not pass the clickable anchor text or link placement details to analytics software.
How do you exclude payment gateways from referral reports?
Add domains like paypal.com or stripe.com to the List unwanted referrals screen inside your GA4 web data stream configuration.
